BT announces upgrade of copper broadband

BT has announced a plan to upgrade the UKs copper broadband net to offer about 80 per cent of the UK speeds of up 20mbps. The current standard is 8 mbps.

The move is an extension of BTs ADSL2 + copper broadband service, sent for Wholesale Broadband Connect (WBC ), which is currently available from 1,017 exchanges , serving more than 15.5 million premises . BT says that it is now advancing around 30,000 lines per week to the sophisticated copper religious service, which about 2.25 million clients are currently using.

BT Wholesale will offer the upgraded options to internet services providers , such as TalkTalk, BT Retail and others. It presently offers an up to 8mbps service to 99 per cent of the UK . It has already announced a 2.5 bn investing to roll out roughage broadband to two thirds of the UK by the end of 2015. The up to 40 mbps service is currently available to more than 4 million homes and businesses .

BT Wholesale likewise announced today that it has passed 1,000 alive roughage ethernet nodes in the UK, and plans to reach 1,090 roughage nodes by the end of 2011.

Cameron Rejali, Managing Director of Products at BT Wholesale, said that the improvements would allow ISPs to offer clients higher speeds and an economical mixture of ways to provide broadband services.
